  1. Pooja,

Thank you for the good work you are doing in publicizing events in the Indo-Canadian community.

I am a white Caucasian male formerly connected with refugee law. I am familiar with the situation of Indo-Canadian women and South-Asian women generally.

I am alarmed at the number of cases I have read of the murder of Indo-Canadian women, apparently by Indo-Canadian men.

I am concerned that Indo-Canadian women live in fear, which allows the violence to continue.

I suspect that a great cleansing would occur in the community if violence against women were stopped and made a thing of the past. What an accomplishment that would be and how proud Indo-Canadian women would be of themselves and of their men. And what an example it would set to society back in India.

But that can only come about by relentless pressure in the beginning from organized women.

We have had three honour killings in Canada that I am aware of - one of a 17-year-old Sikh woman in northern B.C., for which her father was convicted and sent to prison for a long time; a second, that of Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu of Maple Ridge, which happened in India with those in Canada who called for her murder remaining free; and a third in Ontario, Khatera Sadiqi, whose brother, Hasibullah, shot her and her fiance in a car as they talked. (Joanne Payton, “Honour Killing Suspected in Ottawa,” Stop! Honour Killings! 7 Oct. 2006.)

We had our first murder/acid attack in Montreal in 1998 of Milia Abrar, for which her suspected killer has never been arrested for lack of evidence. (See ”Milia Abrar,” Sounds Like Peace, downloaded from http://projets.studioxx.org/projets/6dec/2001/soundspeace_e.html.) Do we want more?

You are now reporting the fourth death of an Indo-Canadian girl under unknown but suspicious circumstances.

In Vancouver recently, South-Asian women spoke out about domestic violence after three women were murdered. Winnipeg has had a similar meeting.

I do not think one meeting is enough.

What are we going to do to see that trends that appear in India of domestic abuse, dowry deaths, honour killings, acid attacks and the like do not establish themselves here in Canada?

What will be the next trend to be imported? The fashionableness of raping women in limousines, apparent today in large cities like Delhi? Will Indian mothers allow male violence to spread to their daughters in this way?

It is not enough to have one large and cathartic meeting and then let the whole matter go. I think much more pressure and organizing is needed to get the message across to Indo-Canadian men that, here in Canada where we all live, violence against women will not be tolerated.

Men who threaten, hit, abuse, rape, and kill women will realize the full force of Canadian law against them.

I notice both Great Britain and Denmark have recently sentenced honour killers and their accomplices to life imprisonment.
("U.K: Two jailed for life over brutal honour killing" and "Denmark: Jail for 'honour' killing," Women in the Middle East, Vol. 44, July to August 2006.)

Indo-Canadian women need to be made aware that Canadian police are not like the police in areas of India like the Punjab. Men who are violent towards women in Canada will go to jail. (And, yes, Canadian justice is not perfect. Some sentences have been too lenient. But that too can be fixed by organized protest.)

Male asssilants will not be able to bribe Canadian police or judges. Police will not take the side of men who practice violence.

Please, in your choice of articles, will you make one focus be the publicizing of male violence against women and the steps taken by the agents of state protection (the lawmakers, police, and courts) to intervene against it?

Please, as well, will you use your column to educate those Indo-Canadian women who do not already know about their rights according to the law and according to international human-rights charters and conventions like the UDHR and CEDAW (many of whose clauses have been flowed down into Canadian law)?

Relate to them, in concrete terms, how to handle domestic violence, threats, and other acts of persecution. Furnish them with the phone numbers of hotlines, women's shelters, police units, and social services to call. Create women's sharing circles for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Tell them it may not be an easy road, but an end to violence is possible if they speak out.

Expose the crippling belief that rape shames the victim. It does not shame the victim. Canadian women, by and large, simply do not share that belief. Rape shames only the rapist and no one else.

Expose as well the unproductive notion that talking about domestic violence shames the family. The man who is violent shames the family. The women who stands up for her family, to protect them against male violence, is someone to be proud of and to talk with pride about for generations.

Not talking about these matters condemns a woman and her family to a lifetime of abuse which can lead to murder, as we are seeing. It is men who try to enforce their violent rule by shaming women for speaking out about their violence. Brave women must stand up to men and Canadian law lends them the strength to do it.

Please, Vancouver women of Indo-Canadian background, turn the meeting you had into a demand for ongoing social services with associated professionaly-staffed hotlines. Demand from professional ministries that they pay attention to your plight. Wally Oppal and Ujjal Dosanjh will, I am sure, listen to you.

Young Indo-Canadian women, choose careers like law, policing, journalism, and social work so that you can help your mothers.

Found a Indo-Canadian women's newspaper in Vancouver because the papers run by men do not take violence against women seriously.

If women do not stand up again and again to the violence practiced by men, it will spread.

Let us end the violence of men against women here in Vancouver by taking action.

  3. To add to the first comment:

This is about the Emergency response meeting for the indo Canadian community held on November 2, 2006 – at the Bombay Banquet Hall in Surrey BC.

Though I did not have the opportunity to attend the forum in person, I did follow the show on the radio. At first it appeared to be a very important forum – where Indo Canadians could come and speak out about their experiences of domestic violence without fear and to raise awareness of how rampant this problem is within the community.

Many women spoke with heartbreaking tales about their own personal experience with domestic violence. Some at the hands of their husbands, some were victims of in-laws.

At the beginning of the three hours there was a moment of silence given to the victims that died within the past two weeks. Then what could have been a wonderful forum to facilitate the dealing with the issues of domestic violence, turned into 3 hours of a political circus. The majority of the speakers spent a great deal of time thanking various politicians for showing up at the forum, and some politicians alluded to the increased number of votes they could expect to get??

One male speaker indicated that grants should not be given to non profit organizations any longer and that if people need help, they could go to the radio stations and they would be helped !

Another male indicated that abusers did not smarten up then they would be dealt with ‘in the Punjabi way”. Does this imply that the “Punjabi way” is one of violence? It appeared that this forum was not moderated and that it became a free for all by the end, with the MC for the evening clambering for speakers to provide solutions. Unfortunately, the speakers late in the evening were no closer to addressing anything resembling the real issues, or possible solutions or possible steps to solutions.

One woman who spoke at the forum indicated that her Mother in law held the threat of ruining her reputation over her head as reason to keep her in line. She was told that rumours would be spread about her having “boyfriends” in the past and having had 3 or more abortions. Unfortunately this victim did not wish her reputation to be ruined, so endured the abuse. Women should not fear such threats, because if they begin to dissolve this culture of secrecy and misplaced “honour”, then the abuser no longer has any power over the woman.

Separating culture from domestic violence. What happened to the three domestic violence victims in the lower mainland is sad and heartbreaking, but what aspect of Indian culture plays a part of these crimes? Just because they occurred to Indo Canadian women?

Domestic violence occurs regardless of socioeconomic status or education level or even gender. Yes, these crimes happened within the community but it affects our entire society as a whole. As a result, women, families and community organizations should have been encouraged to seek connection with the greater community, not be isolated. It is not the temples that need to step up and take a more active role, it is the individuals themselves. It is outreach work through the organizations that will be of the most assistance.

There are trained professionals that can assist victims and their families, provide counselling etc. Unless the temples can create a social services dept, I think there is over idealism in the community leaders of the temples, in their ability to deal with the depth of these issues.

Additionally, male victims did not speak out. The issue of violence against men was not addressed at all last night.

The aspects of domestic violence that are cultural (runaway grooms” dowry, living in joint or extended family situations, preserving family “Honour”) are what sorely need to be addressed. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a lot of skirting around the issues. It appeared as though people were afraid or did not wish to bring attention to these issues. As I mentioned before, it appeared that the agenda of the forum was to increase the exposure of “community leaders and politicians”.

It is understandable that emotions ran high at the meeting, and people recalled their own experiences, those of their friends and family. A better organized forum where issues could begin to be addressed in a systematic and helpful fashion would provide the community and especially the victims, a concrete plan of action.

In Punjab today, female infanticide is higher than any other state in India. Has Punjabi “culture” evolved to devalue the female child?

  6. I heard that in India, many women are killed by their husband by setting them on fire and calling it "an accident" happened while cooking.

The male and female status in India are so unequal and so backward that it is
    disgusting.

Also, it is extremely un-economical to suppress the talent of half of the population.

I worry about our democracy because
in order for our democracy to stay as a strong country, we must have educated and intelligent men and women in our society, not those that follow arbitrary rules laid down by their ancestors and their society.

I just read again the US Declaration of Independence, and I firmly believe that society's rules, like government rules should be actively abandoned and abolished when it becomes repressive and harmful to society.

Who among us are brave enough like the Founding Fathers?

  7. Jyoti was not going the way of Reena Virk...what is "the way" that Reena Virk was going anyways??...Jyoti was a depressed young woman who needed one on one attention...she was depressed because she felt abandoned by her parents who had divorced and subsequently both remarried to other people....she felt she was insignificant...some "losers" (i have other words i'd like to use to refer to them but I will refrain) took advantage of this young, innocent and vulnerable CHILD....A CHILD is what she was! A naive, gullable, bubbly and very social CHILD who was just looking for love...she just fell into the wrong hands...as her mother and father were too busy to tend to her as they are pre-occupied with their new spouses. I wish people would stop blaming the children when they've lost their way...Its the parents that the fingers need to be pointed at...I also blame the Ministry of Childrens services who are there to protect children...they aren't doing a good job protecting children in their care, this Ministry needs to check itself out...Maybe the government needs to put more funds towards helping the children in their care than spend outragious amounts of money on the 2010 Olympics!!! It's sad that this child had to lose her life, but i'm happy that she is in a better place...she has a home now where she will be dearly loved by God and other dearly departed family.
