INDO-CANADIAN WOMAN'S BODY FOUND AT HER RESIDENCE

Surrey: An Indo-Canadian woman was reportedly killed and her body was found at her residence by family members. Thirty three year old woman was married and had three kids. Surprisingly, her kids were home when when family members arrived this morning and discovered her body. The home is on 125th street between 58th and 60th avenue. The case has been handed over to Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the search started this afternoon. Corporal Dale Carr with the IHIT says the woman's husband, three kids, and extended family members live in the home. Police do not have a suspect, and they are not releasing the cause of death. They are questioning the woman's family and neighbours.

I want to make a short comment. What I find extremely disappointing is that the media transposes pictures of past incidents to create the appearence of an "Indo-Canadian Problem." The indian population is massive in BC, let alone Surrey, and it is still growing. We are bound to have problems, murders, drug-related issues, and violence.

Wally Oppal doesn't help the cause when he makes comments that are directed to the South Asian Community - because lay-men start to believe in the "Indian Problem."

I don't know what else to say - but I am angry. We are getting a bad reputation because we are targetted by the media. There are a lot of Anglo-Canadian, and Chinese-Canadian murders and violence too.

couldn't agree with you more.

Yes, we do have a problem here!! The sooner we accept it, the better it will be. Last few months, we have lost three young women, Mothers of youngs children. If you think about it deeply, you will realize how overwhelming the lives of these kids will be. Would they be able to live a normal life with the image of horrifying murders of their mothers. i totally understand where the last comment came from. It was less thoughtful and more political. Somebody was trying to protect their community, but i want to tell that person that sometimes it is good to accept our mistakes. It is time that we understand how big the problem is because i don't want our daughters to go through what these women went through.
It always gets eaiser when we accept the problem and try to deal with it instead of being in denial.

Actually there are more crimes between white people than there are domestic murders within the local Indo-Canadian community.

However, a lot of women from the Punjab who marry into the North American but never met their husbands' parents suddenly go from cosmopolitan Amritsar to some berry farm in Cloverdale.

Amanpreet had to give up a chance at becoming a math teacher but learned to drive a tractor and a van for farm workers.

However, she didn't know her in-laws would be strict observers of Rehat Maryada.

Although the Rehat Maryada has no distinct rule against dancing and dressing up, it does restrict an modern Indian-born woman to what kind of clothes she can wear.

Even author Caranajita Singh Balla complained that the Rehat Maryada was taken too seriously by a few elements in the Sikh diasphora, especially in North America.

Do you have any statistics that show the percentage of crime relative to race? I didn't think so. Most of the searching that I've done, shows crimes statistics but doesn't show any relationship in terms of race. If you have a link, post it here.

I'm not sure what the rest of your statemtent are trying to convey with respect to Rehat Maryada.
Its unforunate that you speak of Amanpreet Bahia, when it's evident you never knew her.

I am a research student who's writing a essay about the what types of changes we are making to improve the lives of most Indo-Canadian women that are suffering from domestic violence.I did know Amanpreet and it's sad how at her furenal the guy's side only talked about her husband and how good he was..blah blah, even though it was her furenal. It's such a shame with so many people in a community that no one can help change the lives of these women, infact all of you guys can sit here arguing about someones life thats doesn't exist but you cant do anything about someone who's alive and needs your help. It's about time the indo-canadian community changed.

The change is simple:

An Indo-Canadian women's shelter.

Baba Nanak stated that since women are the mothers of Sikh children, they should not be villified.

This means that wives do not deserve to be verbally and physically abused or threatened by their husbands and in-law for not giving male children.

For are not men and women equal according to the Guru Granth Sahib?

A child is a gift, regardless of gender.

This practise of doting on the sons while restricting the daughters is unfair.

For even a Sikh woman can belong to the Khalsa Panth!

I also feel that North America allows too much religious tolerance and lets a fanatic subsect of Sikhism break away based solely on a disagreement over raising the Guru Granth Sahib higher so that the followers can sit in chairs.

"If Guru Arjun Sahib hadn't built Harmandir Sahib himself, the fundamentalists would have certainly performed Kopal Kirya on those who sit on the upper floors and galleries." -- Gurmut Martund

Amanpreet Kaur Bahia's in-laws, by their actions, showed that they sided with and attended the fundamentalists' gurdwara.

In reference n.d. - I'm a relative of Amanpreets' - and no one from Baljinders family talked about him during the funeral, rather it was at the Gurudwara.

I agree that the time for debate is over - the time for action is at hand. Perhaps this the point at which critical mass is acheieved or at least the precursor. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help. However, my only concern that I'm not an Indo-Canadian - I'm am an Indo-American.

Harpreet Singh stated "I will be very blunt with you.In the first forum 1,000 people showed up. In the second forum,200 people showed up. And lots of people who gave their names to be volunteers didn't show up," said Singh. "Basically, what needs to be done is the community needs to change their attitude"

I could be wrong but it seems like to me that the local Indo-Canadian media is trying to send out the message that we are changing the lives of victims that are going through domestic violence, but i think we are well aware of how much we are actually helping these victims.

We are all ignoring the fact that our community is facing a very big problem and all i can see is everyone turning their faces around, which is a shame.

If a eighteen year old like me can understand what we are doing is wrong ....why can't anyone else?

It's very clear that militancy will not solve this problem.

While I see the Sikh community doing outreach to the homeless in Vancouver, I see them neglecting the Guru Granth Sahib in action while chanting Waheguru in the temples.

With regard to Sikh women, this neglect is found when Sikh men are honored while Sikh women are denigrated.

Even in Indo-Canadian gangs in BC, very few women participate in it. Mostly it consists of cells of 3-4 men with many more associates.

I bring up gangs because it gives the other side of violence in the community.

I know of a co-worker who lost all her hair due to stress from her gangster ex-husband. Even his family loves her like a sister, and she is white.

In being negative to their daughters-in-law, Sikh parents are forgetting what the Guru Granth Sahib says about women.

Since women such as Amanpreet are the mothers of their grandchildren, why villify them?

Recently I read that the Panghalia's are restricting access by Manjit's family because of an injury they claim happened while Manjit's family was in case of her daughters.

IMHO I feel that the Panche system should instituted here. This issue should not be a family's issue.

It can only be settled by involving the whole community.

As long as Surrey's Sikh community pretends it's only a family issue, then wives will continue to be abused and the gang issue will get out of hand.

very well said :) ...As for all of you out there if you do want to participate in making a difference to the local Indo-Canadian Women that are suffering from domestic violence ..i advise you to volunteer at the local women's center around the lower mainland. That is of course If any of you were interested...

It is my understanding that the deceased lady was driving farm workers to the workplace in Cloverdale. Perhaps she was concerned about the safety of the car and overloading without adequate seatbelts and expressed her concern. She was permanently silenced.

I read everyone's comments and I have few of mine:
1. I agree we do not want to be labelled as a problem race however we do have a problem. Media certainly can address it sensitively.
2. Let's not argue but be action oriented and find resolution to issues at hand.
3. Volunteering does help and eliminating gossip will help as well.
4. I am not certain how much panchayat/panches will help as this is a family issue. I am a bit confused on taking this path. I will have to think further.
I personally grew up in India and went to high school in Vancouver. Delimma is young ladies in India are not stay at home and take care of kids and do all the work at home women anymore. However the problem is everyone in India still desires to be abroad and make huge compromises/sacrifices to come abroad. This includes marrying someone not of same thought process, life style, education etc. as them. This creates conflict or heartache. It's a tragedy that coming abroad is more important than living a fulfilled life in India.
Finally, community needs to step up and help. Let's begin at home and make a choice of not judging others, gossiping, helping and living by the code of enablers for better society. Let our actions speak louder than words.
I now work in california so kindly let me know how I can help from her.
Let's work togather!!!!!!!!!!

Making a fire when camping has been a problem for hundreds of people. Flint is difficult to use, matches get wet or won't light, lighter runs out; even though civilized man has created many ways to start a fire, they all fail at some point, usually when they are needed the most. One simple yet powerful way to start a fire when camping or grilling is to have a Swedish Fire Steel. This small gadget was developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, hence the name. A metal key shaped "blade" is moved slowly over a rod made up of seven metals, chiefly magnesium alloy. The spark that is created is about 5500 degrees Fahrenheit. The Fire Steel is good for 12000 strikes allowing you to start a fire every day for thirty-five years if you want. The Fire Steel is just as easy to use as striking a match, making it perfect for all experience levels. It can also be used while wet so it is useful for winter camping or military personnel stationed all over the world. As one reviewer put it, "this is as close as you will ever get to starting a fire under water." There are currently three models of Swedish Fire Steels: the army model which is the largest at 3.75 inches, the scout model which is three-quarters of an inch shorter, and the mini model which is oddly enough the same size as the scout.
